AmberKey Recovery

Someone you care about prepared this for you. This page reconstructs the instructions and keys they left behind. It works entirely on this computer: no internet connection is needed or used, and nothing you type leaves this page. Take your time.

Step 1 — Enter the cards

Type the word phrase from each AmberKey card, one card per line. Copy the words exactly; capitalization does not matter.

Step 2 — Load the family backup file

Your family backup is a single file whose name starts with amberkey-family-backup- and ends in .age. It may be on a USB drive that came with a card, or downloaded from AmberKey.

Step 3 — Unlock

The packet

Before anything else: do not cancel the phone number of the person who died until every account is settled. Many accounts confirm changes by text message.

Files save individually; keep them somewhere private.

Open an archive export

This person may have encrypted exports from services that have no legacy tool of their own (ChatGPT, Claude, Notion, and the like) to an archive key recovered above. Load any such .age file to decrypt it here, on this device.

Available once you have recovered the vault above. The key that opens these files is inside the recovered packet, so finish the steps above first.

Large files take a while and the progress is shown below. If a very large export will not open here, it is still an ordinary age file: use the archive key shown above with the age command line tool (age -d -i key.txt big.zip.age > big.zip), which has no size limit.
